Broga Grilled Fish

I read that Broga is most famous for their Grilled Fish. Although there are many many restaurants around the town, this particular one is most difficult to find.

We actually went up to Sek Na Tuk 3 times to and fro, but we just cannot find this place until later then (good we did not give up earlier). Situated down the dangerous slope down the road on the left of Sek Na Tuk Temple ,you won’t believe that there is one so famous restaurant is situated in there.

To reach the restaurant, you actually have to drive in the narrow road on the left of the temple. It was scary as the winding road was too narrow for 2 cars, and if you make a miss, you can really fall down into deep into the valley!

Pusat Memancing Ikan Broga

Although situated so deep inside, we are surprise to see that almost each table is occupied. In fact, there are many BIG cars inside.

We are very lucky yesterday as there isn’t huge crowd and long waiting time like weekends (where they park their cars all the way in from the entrance of the pond). Now that I know that such crazy crowd exists, I would not dare or want to drive into this place on weekend!

Place to bakar their fish with charcoal

Salted Grilled Fish

I ordered this for the kids since they cannot take anything spicy. Although it is plain, the grilled fish smells simply aromatic.

Signature Dish - the Chilli Padi Sauce Fish

I love this and the light sauce is just so nice to go with my white rice. But hubby said it was too spicy for him so my maid and I had this for ourselves while hubby shared the kids’ fish ;p

Besides fish, you can also order brinjal and lady fingers (which can be grilled in many way), there is nothing else you can order . I saw each table order at least 3-4 types of fish. How I wish we come in a bigger group so I can try out their Asam / Nyonya / Tomyam / Mushroom / Black Pepper Grilled.

It cost us Rm49 for 2 packs grilled fish, 1 pack grilled lady finger, 3 plates rice and 2 can coke. Not very expensive, and yet it is not cheap either.

Rabbit Farm at Broga, Semenyih

Since our plan to the Sg.Klah Hot Spring was canceled, we might as well utilize our free time to bring the kids somewhere near. Thanks to Kah Hui’s suggestion, we went to the Rabbit Farm at Broga, Semenyih today. Not only it is super cheap, it’s good enough for little kids.

We started off by having some breakfast nearby, and reached Broga, Semenyih before 11am. Luckily the weather is good, so at least its not too hot for such outing. Entrance fee is Rm5/person and kids below 2 enter for free.

We first saw some monkeys tied with chain. We saw some girls playing and feeding with the monkeys too with those free food given to us for feeding rabbit. But they look naughty,  so we dare not go near them. How come no picture of the little monkeys? Low battery mah, nothing much special to take. I need to save the battery for rest since we see many wild monkeys often in front of our house.

The ponies are running around wild and they are very friendly. If you are not afraid of them, you can pat them. The horse in the stable can be ride, with a fee of Rm5 only but QQ dare not ride on it.

Instead of the over eaten rabbits, these little lambs were overly friendly as they come chasing after us for food. QQ and Didi was so scared and they cling hard to us.

Only Korkor dare to touch them….

Korkor feeding the lambs with the rabbit food, hahaha…wonder if they will turn into a rabbit by eating those ah?

Most of the rabbits are so old and BIG. It is not easy to get near to them as they run super fast when we get near to them. Finally a little girl got hold of a BIG ONE!

Overall this is a good place for little kids to go, as it is not too big or exhausted to walk around for them. Just enough animals for them to see (there are also beautiful reindeers, tortise and some other animals at the other end which hubby did not wanna go over as there are droppings all over the place)

Besides some rabbits running loose around in a compound, there are many cages of where they keep rabbits too. Not only the rabbits are for play, there is a canteen that sell everything that cooks with rabbit meat. They offer dishes like Satay Rabbit and Dried Rabbit Meat (Rabbit Bak Kua!).

I was wondering if all the rabbits there are being reared for their meat? I cannot imagine how the rabbits are being slaughtered. Is it also throat cutting, blood draining and then throw into the hot scaling water too, like how chicken is slaughtered?

So sorry that such a nice post with have such an ending here. I simply just don’t have the heart to taste such beautiful and sweet creatives like the pictures above after patting them there :( Can you?

Cool hill trip

27.06.10 / Just info, Travels / Author: chinneeq / Comments: (0)

We are back from our annual Genting Trip again, and no where further. Where else can we go anyway, with our two “Terrible-Two” twin boys!

We stayed again at First World Hotel at the highest floor, 28th! Just imagine how scary it would be if there is a fire and we need to run down on our feet on staircase from the exit alarm!

This time the boys are bigger so they get to go on some rides. At least now, QQ dare to ride on the bumper car and the boys enjoyed being fetched by their sister. However we had to “borrow” another Jie-jie that’s available to fetch another one since they are too young to ride all by themselves.

It is not just fun but also very tiring physically and mentally stress for hubby and I as the boys refuse to eat their meal (especially Didi), or wanted to be carried when they are cranky. Now hubby finally understand why I do not want to travel any futher with the boys. Unless he is willing to put the boys and the maid with his sister or my mother, otherwise it would definitely by a BIG NO NO!!!

Do you check out the Exit Signs ?

14.03.10 / Just info, Travels / Author: chinneeq / Comments: (1)

Do you really check out the exit signs each time you check in into a hotel? I bet many don’t. And even if we do, I wonder how I am going to escape from multilevel hotel floors, when there is a fire going on. I just cannot imagine running down from a hotel’s 22th floor holding my kids without being pushed down by the crowd behind me. Pretty scary thought, isn’t it? *scared to stay in First World Hotel now*

We need a LORRY!

No one can ever understand how a Japanese MPV can be. We use a Honda stream. Kakak and one boy with car seat occupied the 3rd row while QQ, me and another car seat occupied the 2nd row. So when we travel, our storage space at the back is really so limited that even Kakak had to use a paper bag to store her clothes so it can be put at her leg rest area.

Usually I have to pack all my clothes, my toiletries, for instant, acne face wash into a  small bag share with hubby. The 3 kids will share another bigger bag with additional bag to store their blankets, pillows and bolster. See how narrow is the space behind (orange area). If we bring out a twin stroller for shopping on weekends, all of us will have to squeeze only at the 2nd row like a tin of sardines!

Genting Highland trip cancelled

Off so many weeks and so many days, they fallen ill a few days back!

We are suppose to go to Genting Highland today, and have our roomS booked for tonite and tomorrow night. Since CNY is getting nearer and the boys are over due for their 18 month jab, I brought the boys for their jab a week ago. 2 days after taken their jab, they started to have fever. Although their fever subsided, they then started to have creamy and mustard yellow poo. After 3 days, their tummy condition got worse and they now they are as if having diarhoea.

Didi can’t even sleep at night and keep on complaining on wanting to “Emm..Emm” (telling us he wanna poo whenever he get stomach discomfort). Although hubby and me had to wake up several times a night, at least it is good that I manage to catch his diarhoea on time before he leaks out on his diaper while hubby tending the disturbed Korkor. Unfortunately Korkor was too weak and tired to wake up and tell. He leaked twice on his diaper last night. It was really too tiring for me because I had to also wash him several times last night. Talking about parenting sick twin toddlers, sigh….

QQ on the other hand developed fever last evening for no reason too. She was a bit dissappointed that she can’t join her cousin to Genting, but at least she is understanding that there is no way we can have fun at Genting if maid and I have to bring the boys running in and out of toilet each time they leak!

Although we are not going to Genting, at least I still enjoy the CNY mood here at home. There is so much to see in our morning market and we can still go to nearby shopping malls if they are getting better this evening.

Planning another vacation again

Ya..ya….although the school has just started, and hubby just back to work, we will be going to another vacation again by the end of this month. It will be a very short one with just one night away from home at a cooling mountain. Although it isn’t going to be a luxury stay the stay at cancun hotel, my kids still love this place. I am sure most followers will be able to guess where we are going by now.

TV in car for kids?

After 19 months taking care of the boys, I feel that parenting twins is definitely getting more difficult as they grow older. As they understand things and able to communicate better, they tends to be fussier now. Korkor no longer wanted to be carried only by Kakak (she has been sitting at the 3rd row with Kakak since baby while I tended demanding Didi). Not getting my attention when he was younger, he nows gets extremely attached to me now and do not allow me to carry Didi. I always ended up need to struggle alone, catching 2 screaming and crying boys in our car rides as they refuse me to carry the other party. Wonder if it really helps if we get portable TV with a Slingbox so that they can watch their favourite show in our long journey rides. Any with kids refusing car seats can share?

Eating at Jonker Street, Melaka

Kedai Kopi Teck Wah Heng (another quieter part of Jonker Street)

When I was schooling, this used to be one of my favourite shop for breakfast. I have not visited this place, I think for more than 5 years.

Yummy soft pork slice coated with flour

This shop is famous for their soft pork slice (flour coated) cook in Bakuteh’s soup. Instead of serving with claypot, the dish is served individually with yam rice. You can opt for just pork slice or have your soup mix with intestines. Per serving is Rm5 (they add your bakuteh soup generously when you ask for soup refill) and each bowl yam rice is Rm1. Although it is crowded, I see that most patrons are local (good that it’s not discovered yet…*nyek…nyek…nyek*)

Inner garden of Hotel Puri

After breakfast we send the boys home and put them to sleep. Once they were knocked off, we continue our food hunt at Jonker Street (ok, we are not that *tong chiak* actually, just that by then it was noon already so it is time for lunch again). Since it was a Public Holiday, Jonker Street was very crowded. Not wanting to look for a side parking at the roadside, we went to a paying parking lot and walked to Hotel Puri (since QQ wanted to see where Yue Niang lives - place where Little Nyonya drama series was filmed).

It is really a beautiful hotel comprise of 3 long houses where the middle house was demolished and converted into an open air garden / restaurant.

It was extremely hot. A good time for a icy cold cendol. I heard from my brother that cendol and laksa from Jonker 88 is good (hmm..don’t remember this place existed during my schooling day so they must be new). This shop has the most crowd in jonker street (sorry, there will not be anyone to serve you, so you can see people queuing under the hot sun, waiting for their turn to carry their cendol/laksa into the shop themselves) so hubby had to queue while QQ and I squeezed into the extremely narrow shop to seek for a seat (you need to come in a Gang so someone queue while some go wait for table).

Crazy or not the crowds inside Jonker 88 Cendol Shop

I tell you, it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a table! There were already so many people standing at each table waiting so I decided to just tapau the cendol and eat else where. Forget about the laksa….

Opposite the shop along the extremely crowded walk way

And the above was where we stop by and eat our Cendol. So pityful eh??? Normal Cendol is Rm2 and Durian Cendol is Rm3. Well, worth it because the cendol is really nice. Even my proud-to-admit hubby also agreed!

After trying out some nice shirts opposite the shop (too bad I was too large that none fit nicely into me), my handphone rang and mum called me saying that the boys were awake. We quickly walked to our car and drove back to Ujong Pasir to eat at our favourite place instead (check out later this another crowded place situated a bit out of tourist area, but luckily not discovered yet by tourist, hehehe….)

Christmas Lightings at Portugis Settlement, Melaka

Since it is Christmas Eve, and my mum’s house is a bridge across the famous Portugis Settlement, we decided not to drive out anymore that evening, just in case we got stuck outside, not able to go drive home that night. After dinner, together with my mother, we walked to the Portugis Settlement to see their famous once-a-year brightly lit up Christmas light.

Unlike many years ago, now most of the homes are locked. Therefore visitors can only see from the gate. But this year, there was one house that opens their gate to welcome admiring visitors. Not bad huh my pictures from my lousy camera..

Close up on the birth of Jesus (if  am not mistaken)

Another beautiful lit up bungalow (sorry I had to include this man with his daughter as it was almost impossible to catch a good picture without any heads).

It was so hot and packed as some silly drivers still wanting to drive squeeze into those narrow roads on this special day. However not many houses were lighted up compare to previous year (we all guess it is due to the bad economy situation?)

By 10pm, we already went home. Later it became very crowded as we can see many cars passing by our house looking for a place to park. Approached midnight, there were lots of firecrackers and fireworks. Even a Christmas in Melaka is even merrier than a Chinese New Year in Kuantan (hubby’s hometown). How I miss celebrating Chinese New Year Eve in Melaka (no more chance after getting married :( ….

See how much Ipoh unwelcome us

Stopping by Ipoh to eat was suppose to be one of our itinerary, either on our way to Penang or back from Penang.

Due to some reasons, highway at Ipoh was incredibly jam on Thursday afternoon. The cars were crawling behind one another, and by the time I got the exact direction to Ipoh Nga Choi Kai at Lou Wong from Irene through the phone, we realised we are running out of time already with that stupid crawl as my brother had an appointment with his ex-lecturer at USM. So we decided to proceed straight to Penang, and stop by Bukit Tambun for seafood instead. We thought we could stop by Ipoh again on our way back.

Thanks to the stupid changes made, we realized that we could not exit directly at Ipoh Selatan from the main highway anymore on our way back. There is only one exit to Ipoh now, where cars has to switch into divided inner lane along the highway before reaching Ipoh Selatan Toll. We did saw the ONLY IPOH EXIT, but I thought there was another one further down at the south. But by the time we saw it, it was too late as there wasn’t any exit anymore ! #!@!#%$R%!!!

I was so fuming mad and hubby knew how disappointed I was. (You know, the night before I was staying up late drawing out the map all the way from the exit to the Lou Wong Nga Choi Kai!) He wanted to make a turn back at the next highway exit but I was so mad that I decided to move along. Afterall, the kids were all soundly asleep.

Really no “yun fan“  with Ipoh this round. Don’t think we will be able to travel there again, not in another 2-3 years time. I just hate long distance trip, each time trying very hard to catch my all-time screaming and crying babies, hoping they were not thrown out of the window of the fast moving car on high-speed!

p/s: I do not know why I was sounding steaming HOT in this post, but I kept comforting myself  (yes, I am still very HOT thinking about this silly miss out when I write this post) and hubby that there must be a reason why we could not make it into this place, despite so much effort putting in locating places. Perhaps God just want us to avoid encountering bad happening  here?

Teochew Cendol near Komtar

Food hunting was not easy especially if you have 2 cranky babies who were not willing to ride in car seat. We were finding for the famous Teowchew Cendol stall situated at one of the small lorong. Unfortunately after making so many rounds around  Komtar building for more than an hour with kids screaming, both boys wanting only Mummy to carry them and not Kakak, calls made to Healy’s hubby and also stopping by to ask local people, we just could not see any old man selling this famous cendol at any small lorong. Thus an old man directed us to this modern one, and sorry to say, the taste is a total disappointment to all of us. Best cendol for us is still in Kuantan, selling by a Mamak stall beside Shell station along the mainroad on way to heading to Teluk Cempedak.

Genting Cafe, Lorong Delima 6, Greenland (in a housing area)

One of the main reason why I kept wanting to go to Penang. I just cannot forget this very nice Chee Cheong Fun I had there years ago. Although my brother is familiar with Penang food, he has no idea which restaurant I am refering to, each time I tell him. (Just like how I cannot remember the name of restaurant in Melaka, where I usually dine our local food). Luckily we found it after stopping by to ask people nearby.

Chee Cheong Fun from Genting Cafe (Big Rm2.50)

My brother did “ta-pau” similar chee cheong fun, also with Har-Kou (Shrimp Paste) from Gurney Drive on the first night, but it taste so terrible awful that I did not even wanna swallow it. Am I too fussy or what? Nothing beats this one from Genting Cafe, I guess. We ordered 2 big plates and tapau back too. Hubby said I so “Tong Jiak”!

Char Keow Teow at Genting cafe (RM3.50)

Know whats the reason of pricing all the food above? You know, our eyes almost popped out when the hawker collected Rm10 for 2 plates of fried keow teow at New Lanes! Crazily. At Genting Cafe, it is only Rm3.50 and it tasted  much better too.

Muar Chee

I must say that Gurney Drive still have the best Muar Chee. Too bad we did not have a chance to sneak out of the hotel after the kids were asleep although hubby and I planned to, earlier.

New extension of Kek Lok Si temple (we were sitting in the middle of the fish pond, overlooking to the constructing gigantic Golden Statue of Kuan Yin)

It is always my favourite place and  I think I been to Kek Lok Si each time I visit Penang. But this round, climbing up is indeed very very tiring for me. Probably due to aging and I have lost my stamina unlike my younger days. Furthermore, there were 3 kids to be taken care of.

FYI, the boys are no longer wearing diapers as they are uncomfortable with wetness. They only clad in cotton shorts so we have to make sure that they go to the loo every hour. We also bring along a potty in the car and a big bag of pants for change (in case accident happens).

Hubby and my brother went down again to drive up the car when we realised that now cars are allowed to be drive on top of the hill. We then drove further up to their new extension as all of us were too tired to walk anymore.

At Him Heang, to get the tambum biscuits

Next we stopped at Him Heang to get the most famous Tau Sar Pneah. The crowd was so long, and we were told to wait for 25 mins for the biscuits to be packed (see the crowd queuing towards the kitchen?) We just placed order and then decided to come back to pick up the next day.

After eating nearby, we went back to the hotel again, for water play. Surely a must if stay at Gurney Hotel coz it was so fun. Check out who came over to our hotel to visit us :)

Later in the evening, Cynthia came over to brought us to the best stall in Penang that serves delicious porridge. So good compare to those hawker stalls food that we had at New Lane on our first night.

Chu Chap Chook (Porridge with lots of inner parts)

Prawn Vermicelli

Is this place familiar to you? I was trying to find the signboard of this place but see none. Then I google and found out that place is called Joo Leong Cafe, situated at Sg.Tiram (correction: Perak Lane, Jelutong, thanks to Ming Hooi for pointing out).

How to go into this place: This wooden stall is actually back facing the main road so we need to turn into a small housing road, then park at the small place beside some wooden kampong house.

Thai fried oyster

Besides good porridge, we tasted the best Fried Oyster too (called as Thai Fried Oyster), from another a small stall attached to the porridge stall. It taste a little bit different from the normal oyster we have and the oysters are huge!

If I remembered correctly, this is called 3 Taste Tauhu Bakar or something like that. Also prepared by the same stall selling the Fried Oyster.  Hubby loves this!

We had also Peanut soup served with Yau Char Kuai, sold by another small stall here. Too bad my battery is very low and I did not take much picture from here. Thanks to Cynthia and Joe for this sumptous dinner treat. Still waiting for picture from Cynthia’s camera..*hint…hint*

Seafood at Bukit Tambun, Restaurant Jetty

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

We reached Seberang Perai at about 2.30pm. Since we did not managed to go into Ipoh on our way to Penang for lunch, we stop at Bukit Tambun for seafood so that we do not have to drive out to Prai again for dinner.

Initially we wanted to visit the recommended restaurant, Ghee Seng, but unfortunately they only open at 3pm. Not wanting to wait for another 15 minutes, we went next door to Restaurant Jetty.

Below are the dishes we ate:

Stir Fried Stingray with Sauce (Rm16) - nice!

Bamboo Clam stir fried with ginger (Rm16)- but I thought Bamboo Clam should be rectangular???

Steam Tiger Fish (RM12) - sweet flesh but too bony

Fried Squids (Rm8) - nice and cheap but the sotong is soo tiny

Mantis Prawn with sauce (Rm12) - not very nice

Fried Soft Shell Crab (Rm25) -best among all. We even had 2 plates of this!

Total bill was Rm108 for 4 adults (including Kakak). Verdict: Overall food was so-so only although it is quite cheap. My brother said Ghee seng’s seafood taste better or it is either we ordered wrong way of cooking those dish. Had ordered too much fried stuffs until our tongue went numb.

What’s happening to the kids there

We also did not manage to order prawns and crabs as the kids are too difficult to manage (we have to eat really quick before the 2 boys get cranky.) Didi was already showering himself with the plate of grains I gave to him and then pee on his pants. Korkor on the other hand, was already crying wanted to be carried. Talk about eating seafood with little kids!

Long waited Pearl of Orient

With my 2 super difficult to care boys tagging along, not sure if I should label our next trip as another vacation or war. Yes, we are going to the Pearl of Orient, end of November. Finally,  after waiting for soooo many years for the boys to grow up a bit. We are going there for no other reason than to EAT, especially at Tambun (which I have not been to until today).

Actually I am still in doubt if we really get to enjoy our food in this trip. At least the boys are old enough to be placed on baby highchairs (provided they have enough sleep and not cranky), given lots of cutleries, bowls and tiny bits of food to mess with, and food arrive quick enough to let us gobble down before they start screaming, wanting to climb of the high chairs again.

Food/places I MUST eat:

  • Chee Cheong Fun at Genting Coffeeshop (pretty crowded and hot place right?Any place I can go with similar taste ah?
  • Night Yong Tau Foo by the tricycle uncle (if you know where is this place, pls let me know coz I forgot the name of the street)
  • Tambun (which restaurant? I googled and saw Gee Seng, Prawn Village or Floating Paradise. Pls share with me k)

Things MUST buy:

  • Fresh nutmeg (does all wet market there has this?)

Oh yes, we will also be stopping by Ipoh to eat,  most probably going to try the famous Bean Sprout Chicken, hoping to meet up with some blogging friends.

I am getting so excited about this trip and now daily checking about places which I want to go. Just hope that we will not get tummy upset by eating out throughout the trip like this although we are covered by the low cost health insurance.
