Sushi Making Class for kids

We all wake up very early on Saturday morning for this educational trip to Sushi King for Sushi Making, organised by Bao Bei class my kids are attending.

Preparation during the briefing before enter Sushi King

Our Sushi making instructor said we want to make Sushi-KING, not Sushi Hair! Hence, we were all given disposable cap and little aprons (unfortunately, its only loan) for kids to wear.

First, the kids learned some basic Japanese greeting and then some basic names of the ingredients to make sushi.

Kids fanning the cooked sushi rice

First, the rice were scoop with the big wooden ladle (called Shamogi) into the wooden pail (called Hungiri). Then the rice were mixed with vinegar and leave to cool. Why must sushi mix with vinegar? Wait….answer coming soon…

Korkor tasting the sushi rice

Then we learned about the difference between our normal long rice (Naga-chan) and short rice (they call Kome-chan) and we were asked to taste the rice prepared for sushi on our table. But my dear Korkor was so hungry (silly me forgot to feed him breakfast nor milk that morning) that he quickly gobbled down and ask for more!

Didi with his Kanikama Nigiri

With the full spread of basic ingredients on our table (comprise of pre-cut seaweed, rolled rice, tuna, crabstick), sushi making begins with the making of Kanikama Nigiri (using small rectangle cut seaweed).

My boys were super hungry by then!

QQ with her Tuna Gunkan

After that we proceed to make Gunkan. First we wrapped the shaped rice with bigger rectangular seaweed, and then filled them with tuna. After that, each adult were also given a set of ingredients for Temaki and we were taught to make them. Posted it here @ http://decuisine.net/2011/08/making-of-temaki-sushi/

I WON! I WON!! *thanks to the help answers from friends!

And before the session ends, you can see this aunty who was wearing her shower cap ran out to volunteer herself for FAQ.

Now, the question asked was, what is the 5 benefits (in sequence) of adding vinegar to the sushi rice?  Well, the answer relates to our:

  1. Eyes- kome-chan turns shiny
  2. Nose - so that our rice smells good
  3. Mouth - so that our sushi tastes good
  4. Hand - so that our rice will be sticky
  5. Stomach- added vinegar into rice can help better digestion

I just love looking at my two beloved boys wearing their cap and apron like that!

QQ with her Sushi Bento

For Rm20 per pax, we were given some a red reusable bag that consists of loyalty card, pen, notebook and a set of bento lunch as well! **…by then, we all were already so full eating what we made earlier so we had to bring our Bento Set back home!

Not that you will be served buffet there, but I feel that this trip is really a good experience and eye opener for us, who loves and wish to learn about the basic making of Japanese food at home. Worth visiting!!

  1. What an interesting trip! I’d love to go too if my girl’s school organizes such a trip. I am now learning how to roll sushi and it really ain’t easy, so a sushi class will be very useful.

  2. Actually the reason why rice must mix with Japanese rice vinegar is more for binding the rice (making the rice sticky) and not so much for digestion.

  3. So fun!~

  4. What a fun and yummy trip! :)

  5. nice trip

  6. Oh it look so much fun. I really wish to make sushi myself, but still haven’t try it b4.

  7. Wah, even Bao Bei organises field trips for the kids. And this is def a vy interesting one. Really worth it too. The loyalty card is for 2012? Coz I chkd with Sushi King in Kj, the 2011 card is not on sale anymore.

  8. This is simply wonderful. Students learn A LOT more through educational trips and excursions, things they cannot learn from books. The experience, the social interaction, involvement, everything…are invaluable opportunities for learning about life.

Tragic that many parents believe that education is just books, homework, tuition…and most importantly, exams - that is why the students today are like zombies and so brainless, ignorant of everything - they only know how to memorise pages and pages to pass exams - rote learning…and ask them a simple question a week or so later, they cannot remember.

Parents of course are happy as long as they see excellent marks, never mind that their children are like dead wood. Sad, really very sad.

  9. hey Chinnee, this is really interesting and educational too! I bet my girl will love to go and visit too.. she is all for Sushi King.. a real fan!

  10. Interesting…notice that your hubby’s baju the same color scheme as the sushi king apron, matches well but i think its purely conincidental.

  11. really fun!!! KL should have more activities for family bonding! :p

  12. Indeed a great experience. Wonder if they have it in JB too.

  13. This is so fun and educational. I bet not only the kids enjoyed themselves, the adults too, right? :) Well done for getting the answers right. What bonus did you win? Vouchers? :)

  14. ooh this looks interesting & i won’t hesitate to enrol my boys too if there’s one!!

  15. First time I heard about field trip to Sushi King - too bad my girl’s kindy didn’t organise any but I suppose they can only cater for small groups right?
