How teachers punish little kids in school
I think I am still fortunate at the moment because
- QQ has a very soft character, thus hardly being punished in school (compare to stories I hear from her class)
- My two mischievous boys have not attended school yet
Despite being a nice soft girl in primary one, of course she gets her fair share of ROTAN in school as well. This would happen when she:
- forgot to bring her homework or book (mummy is bad for not helping her to pack her books daily)
- when her minds and eyes wander around (look left, look right, look out of the classroom when class is going on)
When she shyly told us she has been ROTAN for the No.2 little mistake she made, we all laughed at her although we feel that this very popular ROTAN-ing science teacher was a bit too much.
Before this, she always come home telling me how this teacher punish the naughty boys until there was once, this teacher forgot to bring her ROTAN and hit on one of her classmate’s forehead when he misbehaved
I also hear parents from other classes saying that certain teachers in their children’s class ROTAN whenever a child do mistake in their Ejaan or Ding Xie. Aren’t we all human and even adults make mistake? Hmm…teachers like that are definitely a bit too much isn’t it?
When I was in Kindi, I remember my teacher taped my mouth because I talked, perhaps too much. I did feel a bit of embarrassment and quickly pulled off the tape when I came out from my class so that other kids won’t spot seeing my mouth being taped.
But if a teacher would to tape my kids mouth for talking too much, I think I would still be able to accept it, as compare to those kind of unreasonable ROTAN-ing casses in school QQ told me.
If only they have a guideline or rules in school, when to ROTAN and when NOT TO ROTAN, sigh…
Ever experience anything similar with your kids? How do you feel when your kids are being punished in school?

My girl was once pinched on the scalp (she did not do homework, but she was absent the day before). This teacher pinch scalp so that if there’s any mark, it can’t been seen.
finally….
found someone who can share my thoughts…
can’t understand the systems!who have the rights to cane and who not, when every tutor were carrying cane in their hands!my 4th year son still need me to pack his bag,not that he’s uncapable!but imagined the tutors asking for exercise paper wayyyyyy back months ago!no wonder the unsolveable heavy bags issue!!!
p/s:email me!
My girl would get chased out of her class to do her correction s there when she forgets to do correction for mistakes. As for my son, a few times he had to stand up for the entire lesson because he ‘forgot’ to bring his book only to find that it was with him all along but he could not find it in the first place. The girl has not kena rotan before, the boy, once. So far, they are ok.
this is not normal. when my elder boy was 3(he’s 5 now), his pre-school teacher slapped him(softly)for not being able to do buttoning. he is quite good at expressing himself, so came home and described everything. i immediately stopped sending him there. he goes to a montessori school now and there is no beating what-so-ever. their punishment is just time-out. he is very happy in this school but whenever we pass the old school, he feels traumatized. its not the pain but the humiliation that they have to endure. it does effect the children psycologically.
Depending. If it was due to them misbehaving in school (ie yakking away in class, bullying others), then I agree that a certain degree of punishment is required. I will put my foot down if they are caned when their work is wrong or if they forget to bring a book. When I was in Form 5, I was pinched at the waist by the PE teacher because I forget to bring my PE clothes. My parents had the teacher transfered to East Malaysia LOL. Teachers are to nurture the students. My MIL is a former teacher in a kebangsaan school - she doesn’t believe in corporal punishment. Up till now, former students come up to her to thank her.
Rotan is definitely a no no at my kids’ school, in fact, they haven’t really seen one.
But there is one case in my boy’s class where this boy who’s always been uncontrollable, like screaming, running around, shouting not sitting doing work etc. So one day, the teacher carried the boy and put him in another room for time out, and the parents complained and wanted the teacher to be fired. But of course, we managed to sign petition to let the teacher stay since he’s good and he’s just trying to control the boy and the class. If he rotan, I think he’s in jail by now.
Oh rotan just only the children did a tiny mistake, I do think that is over loh. Well Chloe still attending kindy, teacher normally will give time out, verbally reprimand. No rotan, spank or tape.
only person that can rotan my kid is myself. haha but i did give the green light to my son’s teacher to punish him when he misbehave but not because of mistakes in homework.
When I was primary school, we’re rotan 10 times for 1 mistake we made in mathematic questions.. too much isn’t it? hmmm
Caning QQ for that small thing is just too much! That is misuse of the rotan. I thought the rotan has been banned in schools? I really hated it when I was a kid, not that I was naughty. I was very quiet too but some moron teachers would come up with stupid rules like “if one pupil misbehaves, the whole class will be caned”. Because of other people’s fault, I kena. So unfair! I really hated that teacher.
so far Jeriel is ok.. no cane yet.. just warning for wondering his eyes around and not concentrating..
he mentioned his classmate will only be caned if didn’t do homework for a few times..
Oh dear….I think chinese school & rotan comes hand in hand. I think it can be too much sometimes, esp the case of “eyes wondering”. Even an adult will look around during a boring seminar!
I’m with Sasha on this one - if anyone’s gonna rotan my kids, it’ll be me. Chinese school sounds quite scary!
If I do go ahead with the plan to send them, looks like I’ll have to tell the teacher it’s RED light from me with regards to rotan LOL
I attended a Convent school and the only time a teacher touched me was in Std 1. She hit me on the head with her pencil case and I disliked her from that day forth!
It depends on the child too. I really cannot control & manage my #2. So if she gets rotan by the teacher, I will not question the teacher. But if rotan until bleeding, then different story lor.
i think rotan is allowed if it’s a really serious crime… like fighting, bullying or stealing. for small matters like making mistakes and day-dreaming, i think rotan as a punishment is too severe. i think there are many other form of punishments which are more humane but need a some supervision from the teachers… like cleaning the classroom, carrying books for the teacher, watering the plants around the school, etc. think the teachers are just looking for an easy way out… rotan being the most convenient, most effective, and no follow up. i know my son’s future school approve to rotan as well… just hope they will not misuse it…
Hmm..interesting topic. I think most Chinese schools condone rotan but it’s the teachers who misuse them. So perhaps it boils down to luck - whether the child gets a teacher who uses the rotan appropriately. YY is going to Std 1 next year, and I can only hope that she doesn’t end up with a teacher who freely wields the rotan.
i know my neighbour’s boy was taped on the mouth for talking but he was allergic to it and developed skin probs after that, the whole skin like kurap. so not good also ler. caning is ok, but only on the butt and only for young kids in private not in public. yea now only chinese schools allow caning and other forms of torture, coz that’s the traditional chinese method of teaching, by force, scolding, punishment etc.
Oh my gosh, i cant believe my eyes reading many of the forms of punishments that exsists in schools & the power thats given to teachers. On what level is this type of pumishment beneficial for the developing growth of such young human beings? It is a parents job to discipline & a teachers job to teach subjects only. What if the teacher is having a bad day? He has the power to exercise his anger through harsh
punishment on a student that may be
looking out the window in class when the
obvious solution would be to
communicate using words for exsample;
“I would like your full attention at the
front of the class please“. No need for
rotan or caneing. There are so many
disciplinery action that can be enforced
without hurting the developing human.
actions that can be applied that deal with a studen
