How to learn Phonics the easy way
And I am in cloud 9. Reason is because I do not put in any effort into teaching them, hehe……
When QQ started kindergarten at the age of 4, phonics was taught instead of ABC. But sadly she could not understand it, nor I can teach her. In our time, we grow up learning the ABC way. Phonics is just so difficult for me. Hence she learns her English words slower than her peers. Neither she enjoy reading.
But recently when Miche shared how her son recognise Phonics thru the Leapfrog Letter Alphabet DVD at home, I was amazed. I was thinking if it could work for my boys since I have not teach them even ABC!
Hence I try my luck looking for this DVD. Unfortunately it is not available in our local store in Malaysia. Some mums I know get this from amazon or ebay store.
Well, I was lucky when CP can help me get a copy. Amazing enough, within 2 weeks, my 2 boys can pronounce PHONICS from A-Z!!
And then I figured out something. Kids learn Phonics faster and easier without knowing ABC first. For instant, when my boys sees
- Letter A, they recognize it as “AIR“ instead of “Eh”
- Letter B, they recognize it as “BEH” instead of “Bi”
- Letter C, they recognize it as “KE“ instead of “See”
Pretty amazing right??
The boys love the Leapfrog Alphabet Factory. In fact, they ask to watch it each time they wake up from their sleep.
So, if you have not started teaching your kids alphabets, then try expose them to the sound of phonics first. Do not teach them ABC first to avoid confusion with the sound of Phonics.
Although I did not survey (am getting lazier with the boys now as compare to QQ’s time) I sure there are plenty DVD and tapes that teaches Phonics that you can find in the market. Otherwise you can also get Leapfrog online.
To catch a glimpse the content of this DVD, I found it Youtube on this link:

Kids can pick up very fast. My daughter learnt a lot from Disney.
Good, kids can pick up very fast. Soon they can introduce them some short story book like A cat sat on a mat…. They sure can read very well.
hey, thanks for sharing…i’ll take note for my baobei in future
Hey thanks for sharing! Will take a look at it. I do not teach my children ABC too but I more on teach them “reading” (they like to follow after me when I read books to them).
I am totally lost with phonics too, hence I can’t guide Yiu Yiu with her English. And true enough, she’s also not too good with her phonics - she sometimes tried to spell English words the bahasa way.
Thanks for sharing on the DVD. Maybe I should also get it and play in my car, since the girls watch CD in the car everyday in our commute.
Wow…. I want to get a copy too.
