New implementation of KSSR for 2011 Primary 1

Under the new Primary Schools Curriculum next year, KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah), QQ is going to be the first batch guinea pig like how I did when our KBSR was launched at my time.

I kinda like the idea of being in the first year, as there will be a lot of uncertainties in the new syllabus. Besides getting new first hand text books, teaching and rating is usually more lenient since it is the first year. There will be a lot different emphasis for this new syllabus and one of it is the interactive fun teaching and learning and to get rid of the practice of cramming to learn.

Also some significant changes that I read are as below:

  • shorter schooling hours
  • cancellation of the policy to teach Mathematics in the English
  • cancellation of the policy to teach Science in the English
  • increase the Malay periods in Chinese primary schools to 10
  • increase the English periods from original 2 to 5 period

However for safety and convenient purpose for transporting this new batch primary one student next year, instead of earlier dismissal for this new batch 2011 primary student , individual school are looking for strategies to “fill” the extra minutes in school. From the briefing given by QQ’s school yesterday, they are planning to fill the extra time with either English lessons and Di Zi Gui learning. I remember we paid some small fee for that too.

In summary, I see that primary education is less academic oriented with the injection of creativity and innovative thinking in the curriculum. From what I heard, rating system might be changed from originally 100 for full marks to only 1-6 rating system (1 for best -6 for low efficiency or reverse) method. No classification of “smart and dumb kids” class anymore for QQ’s school from next year onwards, hehe….(feel so relief man especially I have a very slow learner here!)

Overall I am hoping that QQ will have a very much lighter bag this year and less homework under this new syllabus.

  1. My son also Primary 1 next year. 1st batch for KSSR syllabus. Hope everything is alright for all of them.

  2. Hopefully the chgs r for the better. I like the getting-brand-new-books part. My girl got some really ‘ham choy’ Std 2 books. :)

  3. Just curious…does every child gets loan textbooks from school now? Those days, they are only meant for children of family below a certain income level right?

  4. thanks for the link… and your info too… the part that I don’t quite like is why the syllabus keep changing?

  5. Thanks for the link, will sure have to refer soon or later!^-^ Cancellation of all the English in Science and Maths…oh no!! I’d think putting English in these 2 subjects are vital for the kids, since when they join the college it’ll be easier for them!
