Back to Melaka (September 2010)
We hardly go back to Melaka now, it’s common after being married for long…..
To avoid the tourist crowd in Melaka, hubby took leave on Friday so we went back on Thursday, knowing that Melaka will not be crowded since the next day is a working day. We reached Melaka quite late, as we waited for the kids to wake up from their nap. Unfortunately QQ had fever that morning.

Since it was a working day, hubby suggested we go to Chung Wah (the famous corner shop beside the river) for breakfast. Knowing that the Chung Wah white chicken is very disappointing now, we went somewhere else, and then back to Jonker Street in the afternoon for lunch. Picture above shows the chicken rice we had from Famosa Chicken Rice (modern nice air-con shop) opposite the street.

My first time stepping into this shop. The rice texture and taste is edible, but definitely cannot beat Chung Wah, although their standard is very much lower now, LOL!!! Price is on the higher side too (comparison to normal chicken rice shops in Melaka). But the environment is good, at least with air con, so it is cool if you are looking for a cool place to sit down for lunch.

Next we walked to San Shu Gong that sells Melaka delicacies and souvenir to tourist (a shop directly opposite Chung Wah Chicken Rice). It was these cute little cartoons made of tin that caught my attention and make me step in foot for the first time there. Nothing to buy again, as we local would definitely not get our Cencaluk or Belacan supply from such shop.
Here comes the real reason I wanted to go to Jonker Street! Saw Annie-Q blogged about Cendol from this super small shop, named No.1 Kopitiam (another opposite of San Shu Gong) and I told hubby, must go test. Hubby was very reluctant, because there were no one else eating there like the crowd at Jonker 88 but I insisted. So we pack one cup. Yes, it definitely taste good!

I saw many people walking around with a Ice-ball in their hand, so we bought one of these too for feverish QQ (picture of her with her Strawberry Ice-Ball in Facebook) Each mini balls cost Rm2.80! Don’t you think it is freaking expensive? Well, we had strawberry ice and I must say, it taste really good. Will definitely buy again if I go there next time.

And then, we saw the emerge of another new place directly next to Jonker 88 Shop. It is a beautiful PARK right in the middle of the narrow Jonker Street! I don’t remember seeing this back in May. Another picture of the spacious rest area in Facebook).
Somehow, the state government must have acquire the land of the torn down 18th-century-Dutch-styled home (where the Singaporean owner was fined) and turned it into the Jonker Walk World Heritage Park with a nice spacious rest area, public toilet and a police station.

Although we just had our Cendol from No.1 Kopitiam and flavour Ice-Ball, I get hubby to go over to Jonker 88 to get one Cendol again for me. After taking 2 for comparison, now I know why I don’t like it cendol from Jonker 88. This Cendol uses thick santan instead. Furthermore, the gula melaka taste is too strong and the green cendol is freezing hard. Perhaps it will taste much better after the ice melt? Hubby had ice-kacang and it taste so much better than the Cendol.
So that’s all for our Jonker walk. Many complain that Melaka is extremely hot as one might need the acne body wash after a stroll at Jonker Street. Luckily that particular day was not as hot as usual. The experience feels weird for me though, eating and snapping pictures here and there, as if I am a tourist there!

have to agree, the A famosa chicken rice is edible but cannot beat the chung hwa one, for sure… mmmm … cendol.. my fav… you are a prof blogger, that’s why all the photo snapping lo…
oh i saw this park when we were there recently. i thought it was a public toilet. didn’t know it’s a park
