Time to P.U.S.H real hard now?
When I was a student myself, I was pretty relax with my study. Tomorrow exam, tonight study. If no electricity, then go sleep (in peace some more). Just wake up earlier next morning. That’s me. No wonder my mum was so tense and grow old so quickly.
When I was in Uni, I see similar study trend among all peers from Kebangsaan primary school. We behave totally different compare to our friends with Chinese primary school background. Despite all the laziness and “tidak-apa” attitude, still, there is not much difference in the examination results. I gather that study SMART counts, not study HARD. Or I am just pretty lucky?
And now I am a mother, and I shall enroll my kids into Primary Chinese School. If it is not for the Chinese language that I want them to master, I would not send them there. I know, it’s like a DEEP DEEP HELLĀ for little kids to be in there for 6 crazy long years!
As QQ has been attending a “relaxing” preschool, I am getting very tense with her weakness now. I totally cannot imagine how she is going to cope when she gets into Primary School in another 6 months time. All peers her age can already master Suku-kata and Ejaan in BM, simple English Reading, and Simple Chinese. Even my mother (still a primary teacher) found that she is a bit lack behind….*SOB..SOB*
Am I being too relax on her? I can’t help but blaming myself a lot. For giving too much freedom to play at home, from morning till night. Unlike other mothers, I do not follow strict time table for revision, not much books to revise. I did not perform my duty as what a SAHM should do. Aiyo…only 6 yrs old ler, wanna kill them meh??
It’s just another 6 months and we are as if going to hell (read my next post). I am getting tense now and started working on something recently. Wonder if most mothers out there with kids going to Std 1 are feeling the same like I do….. :’-(

You are not the only one…. I do not spend much time on doing revision with my gal too. She only has homework on Friday. So she will get it done during the weekend. Then other time I usually do craft work or reading with her. And no spelling test at 4yo. Maybe next year gua.
I can sense how stress you are now. Just like b4 my JS goes to primary one. Trust me, don’t stress so much, they will eventually catch up. How you feel and react is very important to your child. I have since learned to be very relax with school work and performance.
my colleague’s son is a pure “english” guy, not even fluent in cantonese. during pre-school time, don’t know how to write and recognise the chinese words, hence was bad too. he has started his primary 1 this year. and to my colleague’s surprise, he did pretty well in his school (especially the mandarin subject) for the 1st half year. the chinese school has their own way to teach the children to learn/recognise those chinese words. now proven that lil english guy can master his mandarin oredi. don’t worry too much ya…
actually i also worry leh, me a banana and hubby oredi said must send our gal to chinese school. i think i must enroll together with my gal next time
if depend on husband to do revision with her, hopeless la….
My son, in std 1 chinese school this year fared quite well in his previous 2 exams. We hardly speak a word of Mandarin at home, mostly English and Cantonese and he went to an english medium kindy. I think you should focus more on BM instead. Let her master sukukata first as they are expected to know a lot of vocabs and making sentences. As for English, the syllabus is very basic and simple for year 1. Hope this helps.:)
Don’t feel bad for not pressuring QQ with too much revisions and extra classes. She’s only six and needs to enjoy her childhood days
But your worry is understandable. We’re worried our kid may not be able to catch up in Std 1 and subsequently may not be among the “ching ying” classes. And allegedly, kids other than these classes do not get “good/dedicated” teachers…and so the kid “slack” further in the studies…
But don’t stress urself out. Be concerned and prepared is good but don’t overly stress urself as u will directly stress QQ too. I believe QQ will be able to catch up, since you’re doing some extra revisions with her. Just make the revisions time fun and relaxing.
I’m constantly worried that Chloe couldn’t catch up with her Chinese as we speaks to her in a mixture of Cantonese & English, the ‘best’ part is hubs insist to send her to chinese primary school coz both of us are ‘banana’
I can only pray that she could catch up with her chinese. Extra revision from you will definately help QQ catch up.
