Shingles (or “Snake blister”)

Thanks for kind friends who called me for the suggestion to “Snake” treatment for my mum. I also found out from Martini that the “snake blister” condition is medically referred as Shingles (also called Herpes Zoster). It is is caused by a virus called the Varicella zoster virus (VZV) and is in the Herpes family of viruses. However it is not the same as the herpes viruses that causes genital herpes or herpes simplex.

Shingles normally affect people who had chicken pox but did not heal properly and people over age of 55, or weaken immune system is at higher risk (no wonder my mum gets it). Although it can heal fast with early treatment, however it is very hard to judge if you are having Shingles at early stage (especially when the blister is not clearly shown on the skin surface yet). My mum’s case was dragged till almost a month and I read that the most common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia where it can cause nerve pain (that’s what she is complaining right now).

Since CNY is coming, I hope she could get well soon, no matter using the Western medication or the traditional way. Sigh…my poor Mama…she must be so sad and down now :(

  8. Sorry, saw this post after I posted my comment on your previous post. But I still think your mum should get her eyes checked by an opthalmologist, just to be safe. And there are medications for neuralgia that can help lessen the pain.

  9. Hi, thanks God i read this. My mum’s case sound similar as ur mum. Her eye swollen since last Friday and headache. At 1st she thought due to an incident where she knock her head with bamboo stick, went to eye specialist, nothing is wrong with her eye. Refer to GP, the doc suspected is Herpes (traditional term called “Snake”). May i know further about ur mum’s sympton, how it happened and how doc treat her? Western medicine or traditional way? Her eye getting serious yesterday where we can only see 1 line of both her eyes, both swollen. Doc said needs time to heal. We are pretty worry. Mind to share more about ur mum’s condition. Thanks in advance.
