SHY - reason of enrolling into ballet

SHY- that is the main reason why I wanted QQ to take up something. Since she loves dancing, I feel that she will be able to “release” herself freely when she dance. I just can’t put her into anything else, although i would very much like her to take up Speech and Drama, to overcome shyness.

U know, I almost smacked her in her first trial class. We have been talking about ballet so long and finally I dragged along my “DOREMI” on that day just to bring her for trial. I knew immediately that is something what she wants when I saw her her teacher dancing with the girls but she just refuse to join in. Fine, I left my boys outside with the maid and go in with her. She hided behind me and refuse to join in too. I was furious and I asked her if she wants to go home immediately. Told her she can forget about dancing and ballet FOREVER.

Luckily teacher understand her silly fear, and ask us to just sit back and just let her observe. I tell you, her eyes SHINE looking at those girls dancing! 15 mins before the class end, teacher softly asked her if would love to join in and she STILL REFUSE. Boy…I was *boiling* already (pity my boys outside while maid alone struggle to feed them their brought along dinner). So I offer to dance in with the class and then slowly only she willing to go in with me. After a while, I went out of the door, to see the boys and assured her that I’ll be back in the class.

U know what, I peeped in and she seems fine. SO HAPPY AND FINE! Very much enjoying the movement and concentrating on the teacher! And now, she is the one always waiting for Friday to come, preparing herself and keep on rushing us how many hours to go before reacher her class.

This girl of mine is really not easy to deal with. However I am glad we went through it ….

P/s: If you have a girl like QQ who loves dancing, you might wanna check out for trial lessons near to your place. Afterall ballet is not very expensive as long as they do not go for exams (I was told exam is not required until Grade 4) which requires frequent attendance twice per week, hence double the monthly fee plus upgrade of costume after every grade.

She will overcome her shyness one day, dun worry. :)
Ballet is a good “exercise” and glad to know that she loves it. I started only when I was in 21, but never regret it. :)
BTW, the fee is really cheap M’sia la, not like here in BKK…

Wah, gotta change costume after each grade? That’s quite wasteful isn’t it, coz what can you do with the old costumes?

Hi Chinnee,

I’m a silent reader of your blog(s) and also a ballet dancer myself. Just wanna share with you the experienced i’ve gained for the past 15 years. Ballet actually gave me a good body posture (i was a hunching back notre dame back in primary school) but the bad thing is, ballet made me walk like a duck…(open feet walking..just like men..except that we dun have the thing in between that made us walk that way..;P). Ballet actually made me a more resistive n determined person…because everyone’s flexibility is different…not everybody can dance like a swan or can do a 180 degree split. BUt it’s the persistivity that was instilled in us, made all ballerinas as graceful as swan and as flexibile as more that one can imagine. So yeah! Ballet is fun! But kinda expensive if you take their major graded exams and also the costumes…different grades required different sets of costumes..but nevertheless, if ballet brings out the confidence in QiQi, i would say, GO FOR IT! And you’ll be glad with no regrets :)

she’s just very shy and don’t undermine her ability. give her time, she’ll shine. Mine’s very much of a show off, she’ll go up any wedding stage and dance with glee. I’m thinking of sending her to kids yoga when she’s abt 5. Something to keep her concentrated and calm.

She jes needed some time to open up. Good that she finally joined in n enjoyed the class. Hmmm… I din know they dun hv to take exam at the initial stage. At least they can enjoy the classes w/o the pressure of exams.

She will Ok slowly. My girl has a ballett mate who was very shy too, refuse to communicate with the teachers or anyone in the class and just an observer for the 1st trail class. But now she can at least mix with the children and willing to talk to the teacher.

Hello Chineeq, nice to stumble into your blog here (I was googling “Ballet classes for shy child”… I’m British but my mum’s Malaysian, I grew up in Singapore, but I’ve been living in UK for past 10 years. I got a 7 year old daughter who’s so very shy. But she loves Angelina Ballerina so much and is always trying to do the pointy-toe dancing at home, and twirling around, etc. I tried sending her to ballet classes here before, but she wasn’t enjoying it, because she was too shy to participate. Anyway, looking back, I think perhaps that class wasn’t teaching the kind of ballet she wants to learn cos they teach ISTD dancing and the dance uniform is black leotard with black skirt, not the pink light floaty ballet costumes she likes. The teacher also wasn’t really a skinny, graceful ballerina type. She’s more modern dancing, or like a sort of modern ballet?? She also taught tap-dancing, which my daughter did not enjoy.

So I did research into some other ballet schools in our area, and decided to send her to a different one - the biggest, oldest ballet school here in Liverpool… and they do RAD ballet syllabus, and wear the official RAD uniform which is light pink or blue or purple leotard with a floaty transparent pink/blue/purple skirt. I also watched the first lesson and saw the way her teacher danced and thought her teacher danced like a ballerina, very graceful and did exactly what ballerinas do…

Anyway, now my daughter enjoys attending ballet classes.. She looks forward to it on Saturday mornings.
Also helps that her friend from school is also in the same class with her - I know her friend’s mum and dad, they are Malaysian and are only going to be in UK for 5 years to do their government-sponsored degrees, so they will be returning to Malaysia next year or so… sadly.
I hope my daughter will continue to go to ballet classes after that though.

My daughter is currently in the Primary Ballet grade. Her ballet school actually does not encourage their students to take ballet exams until they are at least Grade 1… so next year when my daughter is in Grade 1, we’ll see. At first I was also wondering whether to enrol her on exams or not next year, but after reading your blog, I suppose its not really necessary unless she is serious about ballet enough. I’ll have to ask her.

I got a younger daughter - 3 years old - who also goes to the same ballet school… but she goes to Baby Ballet class instead. She loved the ballet classes right from the beginning.

Perhaps choosing the right school and teachers does make a difference…

Good luck!
