Scary root canal treatment for QQ
Sounds like a scary treatment, isn’t it?
3 days back, QQ started complaining about her mouth pain and keep on referring to her cheeck. Since we could not find any ulcer in her mouth, we suspected it must be due to her gums. What a surprising finding on her first dental visit and the dentist actually found3 BIG holes in her top baby molar!
Since she is only 5 and it still take many years for her new teeth to appear, the dentist decided that doing the root canal treatment will be best for her ( I was too shocked as myself have not even once done any a filling in my 33 years of life!)
What is Root Canal Treatment (also called as Endodontic Treatment)
wherein the pulp (hole of the rotten area) is cleaned out, the space disinfected and then filled with temporary filling. If the disinfection is successful, then she get a permanent filling a week later ( I cannot imagine when mrs. dr has to drill out everything again to refill with permanent filling). BUT if the earlier disinfection treatment is unsuccessful, then she will have to undergo another similar painful procedure before actual filling can be done.
My poor timid child, can you imagine how she screamed and struggled while dr has to be so careful accurately putting in needles and such. Thank goodness only one tooth require the treatment and we just leave the other two alone since there is no sign of pain yet. I really cannot understand how a child’s tooth can be so rotten inside at such a young age (although I must admit I did not force her to brush her teeth daily as I did not too, when I was at her age and yet I still do not have any problem with my teeth).
Poor girl, it must have really frightened her out in her first dentist visit.
Anyone experience similar treatment too?
oh dear..poor qiqi. she won’t be sedated? can she not do the normal filling?
omg! poor girl - i bet she will fear the dentist for life. so young and need to do root canal. already i did 2 root canal early this year and i was in pain and i can imagine for her. poor qq! yes, i wonder if kids can be sedated for treatments like this?

You must encourage her to brush her teeth. Emily uses the flavor colgate toothpaste.
You can let her pick the flavor and her very own toothbrush. This can motivate her to brush her teeth.
aiyo poor thing. my kids did a patch on their teeth .. darien on a top molar and denisha in her front tooth a few months back. i went to a different doctor this time. someone we knew and he was great with kids. they were giggling and looking into the mirror. i’m happy with them being so brave and i rewarded them with books after that. now they said they want to visit the dentist.
Poor Qiqi. My eldest girl went through a similar thing when she was 6. We actually had the procedure done in the hospital under GA, so she was not aware of anything or the pain. So much easier…
poor girl. hope she will not remember the bad experience. im worry about jesse too at the age of 2 her front teeth oredi had hole!! cant imagine wat happen next
Oh poor QQ… It must be a scary experience for her during the visit to dentist! So QQ must brush teeth everyday now

I am undergoing one myself right now. I still wince whenever I think of the last treatment, which I have been putting off because of the heavy schedule of trials I have been having the last 2 week. Tmrw I will be doing the permanent crowning. Right now having a temporary one. Msn me if u need to know more ok?
Aiyor poor girl. My daughter also had toothache at the age of 4 yrs old. We brought her to see the Dr and none of them wan to do anything to her. Their advice is to bring her to UH because there are Pediatrician in kids dentistry. She got two of her tooth remove thru GA. Buzz me if you need the contact no. They done it quite fast.
gosh, im really sked of dentist! which i kept postponing dentist visit for myself. i wonder how old the kids shud be, to send them to dentist check… hmmmm…
maybe you cud reward QQ or praise her after dentist visit, you know just to make her feel good? just a thot
Teng Hong also had three second primary molar teeth filled. I brought him to a lady dentist in USJ, quite good, she can communicate nicely with the kids, so they don’t feel scared at all.
In fact, th visited many dentist earlier, the one in UH even wanted to extract and do some filling under GA, but after asking around, I cancelled the appt with UH. A few dentists told me not to extract the decay teeth if they don’t cause much trouble coz they are needed to keep the space, esp the second primary molar.
Now a few of th’s first primary molar already gone, left the root only, but dr. Ng said no need to extract them, they’ll be dissolved by themselves.
Maybe qiqi’s tooth is pain while the filling, that’s why dentist can’t do the permanent filling at that time. All th’s teeth were permanent filled directly after the cleaning process.

i am shock to hear abt a young child had to do root canal!!! guess QQ has to be strong and go thru this. and from now on, make sure she takes good care of her teeth
huh…a root canal is very serious tooth decay wor..or is it just filling?? after reading ur post, i went to Carrefour to see if got suitable toothpaste for philip..but i cant find.. cos most of the instruction say must spit out…philip dunno yet. all these while i just use water
i had root canal done and of course its not the same for kids. they of course would be afraid and its better to find a very good dentist who can persuade or talk to children.
u hv to start brushing QQ teeth everyday already. u didnt hv problems b4, and my guess would be the food that u ate and QQ eats nowadays could be different…
hope no more dental visit for QQ

I can imagine the trauma that QQ went thru as I did a root canal about 10 years back, and I really wouldn’t want to go thru the process again. The dentist that Yiu Yiu saw commented that some people are just plain unlucky coz their teeth are more susceptible to caries - I guess YY and QQ belongs to this category

Though I am selling cakes but I never let Darrius have them even when I have lots of left over…. I rather throw them away when none of us adults want to eat… wastage is better than rotting tooth.
Is it because Qi Qi is lack of calcium? My friend’s son also undergo the same treatment at age of 5. He even shown to me 2 weeks ago.
ouchh! can feel QQ’s pain ler…must get her to brush teeth on time so that no next time for her..i mean the pain.

when i have root canal treatment many many years ago, i didnt know that it was root canal treatment. the doc didnt tell me also, and i was only at the age of 15 like that… LOL
Root canal for QQ ?? at so young age ?? i just done mine last year, that really scary lei … i dun like … i really hate that kind of scared feeling … but sad to said, i m going to have another root canal or crowning after i had finished my ML … btw, how much lei ??? mine is not cheap lei ….

ALL milk teeth will fall out when they are 6 or 7 years old. The dentist should have just extracted the teeth…sounds like you have been cheated by a Dr. Quack.

Lucas’ teeth has cavities too (too much gummy candy) I think he doesn’t have my lucky teeth either. Now, I’m only giving him candy/chocolate on a Sat/Sun. Brushing his teeth every morning and night. And upping his calcium intake too.
I’m with Kittycat - think you should seek a 2nd opinion. Kids shouldn’t have to go through root canal treatment - despite Tee having lots of cavities, our dentist doesn’t even want to fill them up because he knows they will drop off soon. However, I’m no expert

Eryn went through something similar like this and was very cool about the whole treatment. Mummy was more scared than her! haha
poor lil gal.. what a scary experience to her at this age. adult like me also scared to visit dentist. maybe u should ‘force’ her to brush her teeth everyday and make sure in a correct way!

yayaya.. I also don understand.. why root canal treatment at such a tender age? Will the teeth grow back again?
