Thalassemia blood test

We were so worried when our paed suspected Kor-kor has Thalassemia before CNY (low red blood cell). So finally, on Monday, I brought Kor-kor to do the Thalassemia test (luckily he only cried when the dr poked him, and not really much while waiting for his blood to drip into the bottles).

Result came out 2 days later. Thank goodness it wasn’t Thalassemia! Kor-kor is just having having low iron According to some articles I read online, it is common for some breastfed baby to have low iron. More about iron-deficiency in babies. (Unlike formula, Mama’s breastmilk is not iron-fortefied mah)

Low iron could also lead to some growth problem therefore it should not be ignore. Since Di-di is also on breastmilk, doctor adviced that he would have to do the blood test too, poor baby!(I was thinking to just leave him alone :( )

These 2 boys have been given us so many false alarm since they were born. A while it was thyroid problem, a while a doctor told me they need chemo and now Thalassemia. Hubby gave up. After being put into sleepless nights for all these episodes, he said, no more child after this, no matter what. He could not take the pressure anymore, hahaha……..

  3. Glad to know he just has low iron. If not mistaken banana contant high iron. When he taken more solid I think his iron level will normal back, no worry.

  4. good to hear they are free of thalla…
    I am a thalla carrier….

  5. Glad to hear that he’s alright. Last time, my kids paed said dun worry too much about low iron, but after 6 months, just have to take more iron rich solid, like cereal or spinach.

  6. Thank goodness. Very happy to hear the good news from your family.

  7. Good to know that your boy is fine. Give him more iron rich vegetables:

    Lentils, cooked 1 cup 6.6mg
    Chickpeas,mashed cooked 1 cup 4.7mg
    Spinach, cooked 1 cup 2.9mg
    Potato mashed 1 medium 2.8mg
    Peas, cooked 1 cup 2.5mg
    Raisins 1/2 cup 1.6mg
    Watermelon 1/8 medium 1mg
    Tomato juice 8 oz 1.4mg

  8. this is great news:) you can give them spinach since its iron content is high. just be sure to give some fruit too as vitamin C increases iron absorbtion from the spinach. Meat products also increases iron absorbtion but since de twins are only 7 months, thats not an option.
