Thalassemia?

Today is the 6th day and Kor-kor is still having high fever (with no sign of any infection, flu or cough). This morning his temperature marked 39.1C degree (I overslept at night and did not feed him any medication after his last feed at midnight).

Since it has been for days, the doctor took blood test to find if there is any sign of bacteria infection or dengue. At 3pm, my handphone rang. It was found he is having some bacteria in his blood, therefore he has to take the antibiotic now. In actual, his fever is a blessing in disguise. Doctor told me he has other finding with his blood.

Doctor suspected Thalassemia, * a shocking word to me* and asked me if anyone in the family has this problem. I immediately call my mum and my SIL to check. My mum said my cousin had it, but a mild one. Another culprit with his Anemia could also be due to the iron deficiency, *however doctor said it is very unlikely since he is fully breastfeed”.

Whatever it is, there is nothing we can do but to wait for his fever to subside so that we can proceed with another blood test to confirm, probably after the CNY. How am I going to celebrate the CNY like that? What about Di-di who shares the same blood since they are twins? *sigh….no mood for anything anymore* :(

  1. Gosh, that is one term that might shock any parent. I hope that he will be fine.

  2. oh gosh.. my hubby is a suspect thalasemia so i did a thalasemia test during pregnancy just in case..

i hope da doc’s finding in kor kor is a false one.. if not, just hope it is not the major one coz there are few categories… as my hubby da doc said he might be just a minor so nothing much except low oxigen flow in his blood..

hope all is well with kor kor..

  5. OMG..so sorry to hear that. I just met a schoolmate during last school reunion(I mentiooned in my precious posts) n both hubby & wives are Thalasaemic. Yet they were blessed with 2 kids after losing 2 pregnancies. Her story was sad. I truly hope I wont have to unpleasant news frm you. Wishing u luck & pray for the best in the findings for both your twins.

Take care…enjoy your Chinese New Year, dnt let your mood conquer u or affect your family. There’s nothing u can do now but just hope for the best.

  6. Hi Chin Nee:

Don’t worry, both my hubby and I had Thalassemia traits, we are blessed with two kids too However, but we are of different type of Thalassemia traits. Nothing wrong with us just for me my heamoglobin level is slightly below the level. There are many types of Thalassemia too. Go and read out more from internet. However, I think both your hubby and you need to go for blood test to get a better picture.

  7. Chin Nee… be strong …..!!! We will pray for u ya …. take k ..
Hugs hugs to kor kor & didi …

  8. The doctor just suspected it’s Thalassemia, maybe it’s not, wrong guessing….
Be strong and pray hard for Gor Gor for speedy recovery.

  9. hi, i read ur blog everyday just to know yr twin’s update since i got twin for myself whom are 4 mth next week. My angels were once had very high fever when they were 1 month old and admitted in ICU for 14 days in SJMC (both of them). it was a horrid moment in life but that experience has thaught me to b strong. anyway, after many blood test and observation they were diagnosed with pnemonia…. so the dr now strongly suggest that i keep away my twin from public for 6 mths. public these days carry all kind of virus, talk abt new thing called chikuniya (not sure spelling)… this la that la… so best keep them away since they very prone to fall sick…. at least until they r 9 mths old… juz my 2cent from a concern mummy

  10. sorry to hear that chin nee. hang in there.

  11. Hey..take care yea. i now it’s a worrying time for you but everyone will hope n pray it’s nothing.

  12. Sorry to hear about that. Will uphold you and your loved ones in our prayers. Will be waiting for your updates. Wish you strength and courage.

  13. hi chin nee..i hope you are fine. i know and understand what you are going through, being a twin myself and having a pair of twins. please be strong for the babies and qq. most of the time, doctors can be wrong when diagnosing babies. they tend to tell us the worst. also, just some info for you..sometimes breastfed babies can be anemic, reason being, after 6 mths, mothers do not provide enough iron for babies, esp twin mothers. thats why it is important to start solids at 6 mths, so that babies can get iron intake from solids. for this reason, my paed has started my twins of iron supplements, just 1 ml a day.

  14. oh no!!! but dun worry too much about it till doctor confirms on it. well, there is a saying that goes “worry is interest on money never borrowed”

    take care!!!

  15. OMG! I do hope & pray that the results will be a wrong one. Even if it is true, hope it is only one of the twins.

All the best. Anyway, the doctor has yet to confirm the result right? Don’t jump into conclusion yet.

  16. hey don’t worry….it’s not confirmed yet. Even if it was (touch wood!) it’s not a serious disease. My father is thallasemic all his life (since birth) with no complications. He just gets a bit more tired easily but other than that, he is as fit as a fiddle. He is turning 65 this year :)

  17. Aw, Chin Nee. Be strong ya for whatever the blood test result.

  18. oh dear, I hope he is fine.

  19. hope he’s ok. don’t worry so much, i’m a thalasemia carrier as well, if they are minor, usually they are OK.

  20. Oh what a surprise. I do hope this is not true. Whatever the outcome, be strong. The kids need you. *big hugs*

  21. someone i know have it and the hubby also has it, and thus they didnt wanna hv kids. but at mid 30’s they had a girl but she has no thalassemia so its a blessing for them. since u both dont hv it, the twins chances of having is not high. its genetic usually directly from parents (if i am not mistaken). hope everything will be fine.

  22. Really hope that it’s just a false alarm.

  23. Hope the dr is wrong. I hope both boys are healthy and free from it.

  24. oh gosh… poor kor-kor!! Don’t worry, everything will be just fine. Let’s pray…

my hubby got the Thalassemia from his mother. However, my Xandria din not has it but i’ve yet to check on baby Xavier.

  25. ooh dear cnee, this really isn’t a good news to welcome the new year…..but whatever that comes along our journey of parenting, we’ll hv to be strong to face them & i do hope u have the strength!!
perhaps reading & studying more abt it would ease u from worrying unnecessarily & more equipped to face any challenges…..
    take care ya
