Infertility

It can be very daunting for married couples not to have children despite years of trying. An ex-colleague of mine had tried all ways, seeking for all sorts of treatments, and yet, doctor cannot identify any infertility problems between her and her husband. How do the experts define infertility then?

Most experts refers infertility as not being able to get pregnant after trying for a least a year. A woman who can conceive but with repeat miscarriages also categorized as infertile. In the olden days, the Chinese community used to put all the blame on the wife when a couple couldn’t conceive a child. Luckily with the proofs from research and awareness from education we have today, we can no longer finger point the laying problem to only women. Surprisingly, in one-third of the infertility cases are actually due to man.

Infertility in men is often caused by either the low ability of the sperm reaching to the egg to fertilize it, or the low sperm count produced by the body. Normally factors that could increase a man’s risk to fertility are the excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs, exposure to the environmental toxins, smoking cigarettes, age or other health problems.
